Back to Work - Working Girl Tuesdays

Getting back to the real world after a weekend vacay can be a challenge.  But, there always comes a time to hang up that bikini, put on big girl clothes and get back to it.  My fix is to throw on a great dress that is easy and flowy. (Because if you're like me, massive gourmet dinners and lots of champagne are a big part of my vacation)  With that, just throw on some neutral sandals and gold jewelry.  Also, if your return - like mine- is to weather that is less that perfect, you will need a cozy scarf as well.  Now, back to conquering the work world!

"Orange you glad it's Tuesday!" - Working Girl Chic

Welcome to another installment of "Working Girl Chic Tuesdays!"  Since I'm in a very colorful mood this week, I thought it would be fun to punch up our work ensemble with some bright hues.  One of my favorite colors to accessorize with is orange.  Winter or summer, orange will brighten and refine any humdrum outfit.  Because it is quintessentially Hermes, orange also acts to "class up" your look.  I love the look of an orange belt and bag with a neutral pant or skirt.  However, seeing as how we are creeping up on spring, I thought - Let's take it to another level!  I chose to pair my classic white button down and orange accessories with a cobalt blue pencil skirt.  Toughen up this classy ensemble with an oversized watch and chain bracelet. What do you think? I think, I'm glad it's Working Girl Chic Tuesday!

A Fabulous Crop - Working Girl Chic Tuesday

Happy Working Girl Chic Tuesday Readers!
As it gets warmer and warmer, your work wardrobe should evolve as well.  While you still must dress appropriately, things get a little lighter and just slightly more casual.  I think a great way to adapt to warmer weather is to adopt the cropped pant.  Here are a few runway examples:

DKNY

Tory Burch

DKNY

Banana Republic

The cropped pant - especially in khaki or white - will transform your boring suit wardrobe in a brightly chic spring look.  If your workplace is extremely conservative, shop for a crop that hits exactly at the ankle.  Otherwise, just try a few options to determine which one most flatters your figure.  Once you've made your perfect selecation, throw on an interesting jacket (preferrably in coral tones - THE shade of the season) and a touch of turqoise jewelry.  Be certain to add a pair of sky high heels to elongate your legs and you're ready to work it!!

In the Trenches - Working Girl Chic Tuesday

Welcome to another "Working Girl Chic Tuesday!"  Today there is a little nip in the air and it made me think about the importance of the trench coat.  This key item really should have a special place in your work wardrobe.  It's perfect for early spring and late fall when you're not quite in heavy jackets, but it's not yet time for a lighter piece.  There are so many incarnations of the trench and, if you just take a little time, you are certain to find one that is perfect for you!  I absolutely adore the one below.  The little flounce at the neck gives a feminine touch, but the epaulets and traditional khaki color say, "I mean business!"

Below, I've shown you a couple of options of how to wear this essential piece. I think, with the importance of the wide leg pant this spring, a pair of black trousers and a silky top would be just beautiful.  For a warmer day you can pair it with a classic black sheath dress and some beautiful heels. Notice that I've chosen to accent today's ensembles with leopard.  Remember that leopard can serve as a neutral, so feel free to throw in a little color with your ensemble if you want something brighter!  Accent your look with some gold jewelry and you're ready to go!

In bloom - Working girl chic Tuesdays

Happy Spring dear readers!
Ok, so maybe we aren't completely there yet.  But, with the beautiful weather we are having in Big D a girl can dream!  So, here is a little "Working Girl Chic Tuesday" post to put some spring in your step.  Florals were a huge influence this spring and they absolutely must find their way into your spring work wardrobe.  While you may think florals in your work wardrobe would not be "serious" enough.  I can assure you, you too can work in a beautiful floral print dress this spring.

The first key is to find the right floral print dress for you.  The Ali Ro dress I have chosen below is definitely of the "girly" varietal, but perhaps you prefer a more bohemian or earthy vibe.  Either way, you will be right on trend as there was a great variance on the spring runways.  Top off your frilly frock with a structured sleeveless vest belted at the waist.  I am on the hunt for a fabulous sleeveless blazer this season and I think the one below is perfection!  This will add seriousness and structure to your ensemble.  Just accessorize with some bangles and gold earrings and you will be all set!

Remember, the key is to juxtapose the serious with the fun.  And do not hide your femininity this spring....flaunt it in beautiful florals!

Working Girl Chic - Channeling spring during a snowstorm

It's a snowy Tuesday here in big D.  Yes, it was seriously 75 degrees here this weekend and now it's 12 degrees.  Like they say here in Texas, if you don't like the weather, just wait an hour.

But, all of this snow and ice has me thinking on this "Working Girl Chic Tuesday."  It's February, meaning that all a girl can find in the store are new spring pieces.  That can be a bit discouraging.  After all, one thing I hate is making new purchases and having them sit in my closet for a couple of months.  But, do not despair, dress code diaries to the rescue!  When I buy work wear items I like to find things that (with just a bit of tweaking) can be worn year round. Particularly, I love sleeveless sheath dresses in bright prints like the one below.  Just add a long sleeve, bow-neck blouse, tights and booties and you're ready for winter.  Once the weather finally gets warmer you can wear sandals and a chunky, bohemian-inspired necklace and be right on trend. The best part is, these booties can work great with tights when it's frigid or with a bare leg in the spring (because of the peeptoe and woven design....think of them as a versatile sandal). I also love a nod to spring with a structured coral bag like this one from Topshop.

When you begin making your wardrobe pieces work for you in multiple ways and in various seasons you can exponentially expand your wardrobe!  So, don't get frustrated with winter....get creative!

Working Girl Chic

A much requested topic, and one that can be quite challenging....even for the fashion obsessed like me, is how to build a stylish yet appropriate work wardrobe.  This is certainly a topic that will become a weekly installment.  It is simply too much to cover in one post.  So, let's get started!

I think the basis for a great work wardrobe starts with a few staples.  The first of which is a fabulous black sheath dress.  (Or, if you're anything like me, a few different classic black sheaths.)  It's always great to have these basic to fall back on when you just don't feel like pulling it all together.  I am not, however, suggesting that you throw on that black dress with black pumps and a cardigan.  That is not eye-catching enough for you, lovely reader!  Instead merely use it as a base on which to layer something with a little flair.  If your dress is the appropriate length (to the knee if you are on the taller side or right above the knee if you're on the petite side), then you have creative license to add some excitement! Start out with a great motorcycle jacket, statement necklace and some not-so-basic black pumps.   Contrasting the classic with something unexpected is the first key to keeping your work wardrobe exciting!
